The Story — Nine Koi, a Wish for Abundance
In Chinese tradition, the koi is a symbol of abundance and good fortune: the word for fish, “yu,” sounds exactly like the word for surplus — hence the New Year blessing “nian nian you yu,” may you have abundance year after year. Nine, “jiu,” sounds like “forever,” so nine koi carry a wish for fortune that lasts and lasts. The koi is also loved for its courage — legend tells of koi swimming upstream to leap the Dragon Gate waterfall and become dragons — a symbol of perseverance rewarded. Circling together in the lotus pond, these nine koi wish the home prosperity, harmony and success that never ends.
